Raise Your Own Chickens
I believe there is no better way to enjoy healthy, organic eggs, other than to have your own chickens. You can buy good quality eggs if owning your own is not an option, and I have been there for sure. If you have a little land of your own, and a little bit of time each day (about 10 minutes each morning, and night), why not enjoy the benefits of owning your own?

Aside from enjoying their goofy personalities, you get to enjoy their eggs. The more grass, and wooded area chickens have to live on, the higher quality their eggs will be. The more natural food that they have access to, the less you will have to supplement their diet with store bought food. My goal is to get high quality eggs, by letting my chickens free range, and eat what they are meant to eat. I do supplement with some store bought food in the winter months when their natural food selection is scarce. When Spring arrives, and egg laying starts back up, they are off to finding bugs, worms, berries, clover, and grasses.

Typically, a chicken will lay around 1 egg per day. Their egg production will slow down as they age, but they can give you several years worth of good egg production. Chickens will start laying eggs somewhere around 4 months old, depending on the breed. There does not need to be a rooster involved for chickens to lay eggs. You only need a rooster to fertilize the eggs if you wanted them to hatch (or incubate them).
They do need a safe place to stay at night, and some shelter for bad weather during any time of the day. You can build a shelter yourself, or buy one of the many different chicken coop kits that are available. I started out with this one HERE, until I had a bigger, and more permanent shelter built. Getting fresh, organic, free range eggs, is one Wild and Primal feeling that I can’t explain! Eggs are such a big part of my diet, I could not imagine getting them from anywhere else, other than my own backyard.

Even if you don’t have a lot of land for chickens to free range on, and you have to feed them a little bit extra, their eggs would still be better than the majority of the store bought eggs. Take the chance, and give it a try!! I’m glad I did!
